1966 Before the records

Liquid light

In autumn 1966 the light show was made by hand: coloured oil and dye between glass slides, boiled by a projector lamp with its heat filter taken out.

Surface: warped noise boiling like the slide in a projector.

1967 Album 1 of 14

Illustration of the young band in paisley shirts and red jackets, their faces repeated as if seen through a prism.

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn

Recorded at Abbey Road in the spring of 1967, in the studio next to the Beatles making Sgt Pepper. The title comes from chapter seven of The Wind in the Willows.

Surface: a kaleidoscope, after the prism lens Vic Singh shot the cover through.

1968 Album 2 of 14

Green and orange psychedelic collage with a curving string of planets and a ringed world.

A Saucerful of Secrets

The first Pink Floyd sleeve by Hipgnosis, the studio of Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell, who went on to design The Dark Side of the Moon.

Surface: two inks that will not mix, boiling in a slide.

1969 Album 3 of 14

Orange and blue duotone of figures dancing on a rocky hill beside a windmill.

More

The soundtrack to Barbet Schroeder's film More, recorded at Pye studios in London in January and February 1969.

Surface: cobalt ink screened onto orange in halftone dots.

1969 Album 4 of 14

Photo-style picture of the band in a house doorway, with a framed picture on the wall that repeats the scene inside itself.

Ummagumma

A double album. One disc is live, from Mothers Club in Birmingham and the College of Commerce in Manchester. On the other, each member takes a turn on his own.

Surface: a picture inside a picture, the frames falling inward forever.

1970 Album 5 of 14

A black-and-white Holstein cow standing in a green field under a blue sky.

Atom Heart Mother

After the space-rock years the band asked for something plain on the cover. They got a cow in a field, with no band name and no title on the front.

Surface: Holstein patches over green pasture.

1971 Album 6 of 14

A curving pink shape rising out of turquoise water, circled by ripples.

Meddle

Echoes and One of These Days were played for Live at Pompeii, filmed over four days in October 1971 in the empty amphitheatre, with no audience at all.

Surface: cooled crust over magma, cracked like a heated slide.

1972 Album 7 of 14

A small red figure among blurred blue and cream points of light.

Obscured by Clouds

The soundtrack to Barbet Schroeder's La Vallée, recorded at the Château d'Hérouville in France in two breaks from making The Dark Side of the Moon.

Surface: a valley you only see through gaps in the cloud.

1973 Album 8 of 14

A white beam enters a glass prism on black and leaves as a rainbow.

The Dark Side of the Moon

At Earls Court in May 1973, a seven-foot model plane crashed into the stage at the end of On the Run.

Surface: op art. Two sets of rings in a vibrating colour pair, tuned to equal brightness.

1975 Album 9 of 14

Two men in suits shake hands on a studio lot; one of them is on fire.

Wish You Were Here

On 5 June 1975, while the band were mixing Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Syd Barrett walked into Abbey Road. At first the band did not recognise him.

Surface: marbled bands in the colours of an oil film.

1977 Album 10 of 14

A brick power station with four chimneys, smoke, and a pink pig floating in the sky.

Animals

In December 1976 a 12-metre inflatable pig broke loose over Battersea Power Station and came down in Kent.

Look for the pig in orbit.

1979 Album 11 of 14

A plain wall of white bricks.

The Wall

On the 1980–81 tour a wall was built across the stage during the show, then brought down at the end.

Keep going: this one comes down too.

1983 Album 12 of 14

A red poppy at the corner of a black field, above a striped medal ribbon and a row of service ribbons.

The Final Cut

It began as Spare Bricks, music for the film of The Wall. After the Falklands War, Roger Waters wrote new songs for it under the working title Requiem for a Post-War Dream.

Surface: ash and poppies under a passing searchlight.

1987 Album 13 of 14

Rows of iron hospital beds stretch along a beach into the sea, a maid makes one, and a red hang-glider flies overhead.

A Momentary Lapse of Reason

The first Pink Floyd album without Roger Waters, recorded mostly on David Gilmour's houseboat, the Astoria.

Surface: a beach at low tide.

1994 Album 14 of 14

Two tall metal heads face each other in a field, their profiles making a third face between them.

The Division Bell

By 1994 the light show ran on hundreds of automated lights and copper-vapour lasers.

Its moon is a mirror ball.

1967 1994

Fourteen albums line up

That was the band's story, record by record. The rest of the page belongs to MONEY: a slide you can run yourself, the history in 3D, the dates, the band, and how to book them.

Interactive · the projector

Run the light show

In 1966 Peter Wynne-Willson took the heat filters out of slide projectors and let the lamp cook coloured liquids between glass. This slide is a fluid simulation running on your graphics card.

Drag across the slide to drop dye. Heat the lamp to boil it.

For Syd

Where it started

Syd Barrett named the band after two bluesmen, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. He had trained as a painter at Camberwell.

He left in 1968 and went home to Cambridge, where he painted and kept a garden. He died there on 7 July 2006.
